Path of Exile Item Upgrading
Item upgrading allows players to enhance their weapons and equipment with new affixes, boosting the base stats of the item or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory, and also access the kiln.
Typically items that have weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base, while items with strong bases like Eth titans don't change significantly in their stats after being upgraded.
Upgrade components
Upgrade components can be used to upgrade trinkets, armor, weapons and gathering tools, providing an attribute bonus or additional effect when the equipment is being used. They can be bought from vendors, or found in loot, thrown away by enemies or as a reward for missions or chests. Some upgrades have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a specific level to upgrade.
To upgrade an armor, weapon or other item in the game, the player must select it and then click the Upgrade button in the toolbar. This will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview showing the expected upgrade stats as well as the necessary component or materials.
There are three kinds of upgrade components including universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which are made up of gems, can be put in any type of equipment, and offer lower bonuses than upgrade components that are restricted to a specific type. Infusions are gems that are only available in equipment that is legendary or ascended. They offer the same bonuses as jewels, however they cannot be used in other equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They will add the suffix to the end of item names. If an item fails to attain its maximum level The NPC will offer the player the option of transfer it to a different character and re-infuse it with a different set of upgrades. This process can take up to two hours, and costs the same amount of material. However it has a lower rate of success.

Rerolling
